Wanna try something different on your SUP? The upcoming West Coast Canoe Challenge (WCCC) is ideal for all types of craft, including Stand Up Paddle boards .
This race has a 10km or 20 km section on the lower Berg River ending at the Velddrift Bridge.
It is a fun event with medals, lots of prizes and everybody is welcome. It is predominantly a fun canoe race but the race organisers would really love to see some SUP’s represented!! How awesome?

The longest running event on the annual SUPSA event calender, the Coreban Summer Series, took place amidst much anticipation last weekend. 2015 saw a few changes from the past few versions of the event;
In addition to Coreban Stand Up Paddleboards, who have sponsored the event since its inception in 2010, new co-sponsors, Under Armour as well as Xpression Sports Coffee added financial and organisational backing to this popular event. The three day event also moved from its traditional venue of Bloubergstrand to take place in False Bay for the first time.

This event is the first sanctioned race and surf event of the 2016 SUPSA rankings series, which encouraged a growing contingent of Durban paddlers to make the trek down to Cape Town to compete. They were welcomed by the Capies and some warmer conditions than their last trip down for the 2015 SA Champs in held in an August South Easter!
Prevailing conditions determined that the event was actually completed in two days, with the entire Surf contest running during a marathon 10.5 hour day on Saturday at Muizenberg. The first heat of the Mens Open division entered the water in clean 1-2ft offshore waves at 7.30 am and 41 heats later the Mens Open Final was completed in building 3-4 ft onshore surf which tested the competitor’s versatility in varying conditions.

Eventually the Mens Open Surfing was won by Tom King who held off strong challenges from Dylan Frick , Nick Walker and Kimon Dos Santos. The Ladies Open Surfing saw Tarryn King reclaim the top spot ahead of the twins, Penny Stemmet and Tammy Robarts, ahead of Chelsea Van Rooyen.

In the Juniors Boys , Nick Walker maintained his dominance, as did Khara Thompson in the Junior Girls, and Grantlee Read in the Legends. The Diva’s division was won by Kim Du Venage, and Groms by Cameron Tripney. The popular Social divisions were won by Mike Teron in the Mens and Jess Gould in the Womens.
Fresh onshore conditions greeted competitors in the racing divisions on Sunday morning at Fish Hoek beach. Technical races in and out through the 2 foot onshore surf tested competitors wave knowledge as well as paddling skills, and most divisions saw nailbiting races go down to the wire.

In the end Dylan Frick showed his class to take out the Mens Open race, while Tarryn King did likewise in the Womens Open. Grantley Reed took his second win in the Legends, while Kimon Dos Santos won the Junior Boys.
Competitors than moved to the start of the long distance race , run as a downwinder from Millers Point to Fish Hoek. While many were praying for the wind to strengthen prior to the race, the race proceeded in a South Easter blowing around 15 knots, making for a challenging run for novices to the course.
Again Dylan Frick showed his class despite not being familiar with the conditions and held off a strong challenge from Tom King to win the race. Tarryn King made a clean sweep of wins in the Ladies Open division ahead of Jackie De Billot from Durban. The Legends division saw some very competitive racing across the division, with Peter Petersen holding off local Gary Van Rooyen ahead of a tight cluster of racers. In the Junior Boys, Kimon Dos Santos celebrated his last junior event with a convincing win ahead of Matt Maxwell. Monika Wolgemuth took out the Divas and made them proud with a third in the Open division as well. Mike Teron and Emmie Ruddock were the winners of their respective Open Divisions.
The overall results for the event are calculated by adding the scores for the surf event to the two races to determine the most all rounded paddlers in each division. A prizgiving was hosted by the Fish Hoek Lifesaving Club in their comfortable clubhouse.

In the Mens Open division Dylan Frick narrowly edged out Tom King, with juniors Kimon Dos Santos and Matt Maxwell filling the rest of the podium to underline the bright future of Supping in SA. In the Ladies Open Tarryn King dominated with three wins ahead of Jackie De Billot and Tammy Robarts. Diva’s winner Monika Wolgemuth also had an impressive fourth in the Ladies Open.
In the Legends division the podium was filled by Grantley Read, Gary Van Rooyen, Pete Petersen and Dave Maxwell. In the Junior Boys Nick Walker ended on top ahead of Kimon Dos Santos, Matt Maxwell and Henco Scholtz. None of the Junior Girls entered the races, so their overall results were determined by the surfing event, and saw Khara Thompson ahead of Gabi Lupini, Cauitlin Brouckheart and Bowien Van Der Linden.
Podium positions in the Social Mens went to Mike Teron, Justin Linley, Steve Tripney and Grant Renecle , with Emmie Ruddock winning the Social Womens ahead of Tatum Prins, Jess Gould and Marije Elgersma.
The only Grom entrant, Cameron Tripney, also won the Special Spirit of Under Armour award for his efforts over the weekend.

Team Coach:
Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate experience working;
– with elite athletes, preferably with competition and/or coaching experience at national or international surfing events.
– within a team dynamic in an intensely competitive team event environment
The Coach will assume overall responsibility for Team training, conditioning, performance and motivation both prior to, and during, the event.
Team Manager:
Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate ability to:
successfully manage a large team of athletes and support staff in a major event environment over a 2 week period.
plan and implement all team logistics prior to departure and during the event.
successfully liaise with the local and international media and to give accurate information for daily press releases and website requirements.
to relate to athletes and team coaches while playing a pivotal role in team harmonics and discipline.
In addition to the above requirements, the Manager will assume overall responsibility for managing the team including the responsibility for budgeting, expenditure and fundraising, as well as liaison and reporting to SUPSA

Will be awarded full Protea colours and are therefore required to be South African citizens
Are required to fund the costs of their own trip to the extent that team fundraising does not cover the costs of travel and accommodation.
The Coreban Summer Series 2015, is one of the only Stand up Paddleboarding (SUP) events of it’s kind, it is not only South Africa’s oldest running SUP contest but is also the largest.
The Coreban Summer Series started in 2009 and has grown from strength to strength over the years, from the organization to the level of the participants, across all the disciplines. The contest attracts riders from across the country as well as abroad, and marks the start of the SUPSA 2016 Racing and Wave Tour. The highest ranked participants at the end of the Tour are eligible for South African Team Selection.
What makes the Coreban Summer Series so popular is that it is a multidisciplinary SUP event that comprises of SUP Surfing and SUP Racing, so there is not only individual category placing’s, but overall pacing’s as well, in order to determine the best all rounded Paddler’s, and bragging rights for the winners.
This year is the first year the event will not take place in Big Bay, and we will run it in False Bay with the Wave Riding taking place at Muizenberg, and is generally the most competitive division. Participants are divided up into heats of 3-5 SUP’ers where they surf against each other for points, more points are given to the SUP’ers who perform the most radical maneuver’s on a wave within the specified time limit, the two riders in each heat with the highest points move onto the next round, until only 4 remain in the final. Some standouts in the past years and guys and girls that are sure to turn heads in this years competition are, Justin Bing, Tom King, Greg Bertish, Brandon Ribbink, Kimon Dos Santos, Nick Walker, and Grantley Read. While In the Ladies division our eyes will be on Tarryn King, Penny Stement and Tammy Robarts. Our biggest division in the Wave Riding event is the Social Davison, which is for those paddler’s new to Competition and that have not been SUP’ing for too long.
For the racing we will move to Fish Hoek, the first race is the Technical race which is modeled on the BOP (Battle of the Paddle) and now PPG (Paddle Pacific Games), this is a highly exciting spectator race as there is lots of action close to shore, the race can be anywhere from 2-6km in length and involves the paddlers to paddle in and out through the surf and around a series of buoys, and it aloso usually involves a short beach run. Having the race run through the surf opens exterior forces to change the outcomes as the paddlers can use waves to their advantage, but in turn can also be taken advantage of.
The Second Race is a long distance and for this time of year with the South East wind in Cape Town we are expecting to have a Downwind race, from Millers Point to Fish Hoek, roughly 11km. here the riders will use wind generated waves or bumps to “fly” across the finish line first. This is fast becoming one of the more popular elements of SUP, and by many is regarded as the most fun, but be cautious the correct safety precautions should be followed at all times (see http://xpressiononthebeach.com/downwind-safety/ )
At the end of the three days, after hours of sunburn, smiles and hi fives, the results are tallied and the overall and individual winners are announced, tears are spilled along with beers as we close down another event. We invite you, SUP clubs and brands, to put forward your best teams and join us for an epic evening of team racing. In the world-class setting of the V&A Waterfront, at the foot of Table Mountain, there can be no better venue, where the only losers are the ones that do not enter.

Race Overview: The event will consist of 2 races, where the combined results of both races will be taken into account and the winners decided.
The Relay: Teams will line up and race around a circuit (400-500m), one team member at a time (on the Same board).
Individual: All competitors will line up and race around the circuit. The results of the top 3 competitors from each team will be added to the teams relay result.
Team Entry: R600 (per team)
