So what does the SUP Instructor Course entail?

Participants are assessed in the following areas and marked as “competent” or “not yet competent”. If marked as not yet competent it affords them the opportunity to be re assessed in that category.

 

  • Venue Analysis – identify appropriate Learn to SUP venue, Identifying and Listing inherent dangers in and around this location, identifying safe entry and exit points for learners, Identifying key hazards specific to the designated location and completing a venue analysis worksheet including detailed diagram. (for wave riding SUP and flat water SUP)
  • Lesson Planning Assessment Sheet- develop appropriate lesson aims, breaking sessions down into drills appropriate to session requirements, sequencing activities appropriately, including timing of activities, ensuring that the session plan is inclusive of all Stand Up Paddlers, identifying safety issues and strategies for the activities and adequately completing the lesson plan sheet.
  • Lesson Delivery – deliver a professionally run SUP lesson (both flat water and wave riding) fulfilling all the SSA and ISA Lesson requirements (done in pairs during the course).
  • Surfing Skills Assessment – Participants need to be competent in the ocean and on the flat water. Must be able to paddle, negotiate through oncoming waves, take off on unbroken waves, complete a basic bottom turn, ride forehand and backhand, exit the wave safely and return to shore in a safe manner.
  • Topic Discussion – Must have the ability to select a topic and talk for 2 minutes with confidence, knowledge and authority on the subject.
  • Self-assessment and peer assessment – Provide constructive feedback on conduct during the lesson as coach. As well as provide constructive feedback from lesson as student. (including strengths, weaknesses, self reflection etc)
  • Complete 20 logged hours coaching using the SSA or ISA technique (to be completed under an already qualified ISA or SSA SUP instructor)

 

Complete a Level 1 in First Aid.

 

As the course is weather dependent, a window period has been set aside from Monday 9th November through to Friday 13th November and it will run over the best 2 days period (approximately 16 hours total).
